In IE8 deleting or moving components in template composer doesn't work

Reproduction path
1. Start IE8
2. Go to the template composer of a 7.6 project
3 Delete or move a container item

Expected behaviour:
The deleted item is no longer displayed. Or, the moved item is displayed where it is moved to.

Observerd behaviour:
The item is deleted, but still displayed (no interaction is possible). Or, the movement action did not take place.
