Gallery Manager: Add the possibility to separate image variants based on their usage purpose

The problem:
Say I have a logo image and a banner image.These are the usages or we can say also image categories.
Logo: 100px X 100px
Banner: 1920px X 200px
It doesn't makes any sense to generate from a logo a banner variant and vice versa.
I would like to somehow separate these 2 usages.

Possible Solution:
Give the user the possibility to tag their image variants with category information.
Possible categories:
-Banner
-Logo
-Text embedded images etc - maybe defined by user
Then inside the CMS add the possibility to be able to choose the image category that I want to use under the specified folder. It means only variants in this category should be generated not every variant as it does works at the moment.

Any suggestion or else is welcome.
