Empty mandatory Link field (hippo:mirror) not highlighted by validation

This issue is derived from ESSENTIALS-670. The blog document type has a authors field which is a hippo:mirror to link to one or more author documents. When this field is left empty and I click "Save", I get a message like "Link missing", and the authors field is not highlighted, so I'm having a hard time interpreting the error message.
