Regression: Unable to edit Document types in IE8

In both gogreen and archetype it is not possible to edit document types using IE8.

Steps to reproduce (using archetype)
1. login as admin
2. navigate to the 'Configuration' section in the Browse perspective
3. select hippo:namespaces->gettingstarted
4. click the newsdocument to start editing this document type

Expected: new TAB is opened in read-only mode and shows the newsdocument document type content.
Actual: new TAB is opened but not displayed

5. refresh browser (F5) to make TAB visible
6. click Edit

Expected: content becomes editable
Actual: content remains read-only

When clicking Edit, the javascript console logs the following error:
