BACKPORT - Make field plugins more robust in case of incorrect configuration

The field plugins currently assume the configuration to be correct; this may not always be the case (in development, for example). Log clearer warning to help sort out the problem and always check whether the field descriptor has indeed been retrieved when it's needed (i.e. it's not null).
