Making a hippo mirror field mandatory has no effect

If you create a document type with a picker field (hippo mirror) and mark it as mandatory, you can still create an instance of the document and save it without selecting anything. Modifying the prototype to give it an empty docbase or deleting the node from the prototype entirely doesn't help.
