Plain REST service setup not working

The plain REST pipeline created by essentials does not work out of the box due to a 

JAXBException occurred : class org.example.beans.NewsDocument nor any of its super class is known to this context..

Reproduction:

Create a 13.0.0-1 archetype project

Use Essentials to add News

Use Essentials to set up the REST plain pipeline to expose news documents

rebuild and restart

hit http://localhost:8080/site/api-manual/NewsDocument/

Expected:

List of news documents

Observed:

JAXBException occurred : class org.example.beans.NewsDocument nor any of its super class is known to this context..
