Update all content fails with an NPE after uploading an image in a hippo:resource field in the document type editor

You can upload an image in a hippo:resource field in the document type editor. This makes sense, for the other field types you can also fill in a default value. However when I do this, and save the type, "update all content" fails with an NPE.
